5062 Lice and Nits

Students found to have live head lice will not be permitted to remain at school.  Upon discovering the presence of live lice, the student’s parent(s) or guardian(s) will be notified, and if appropriate, will be asked to pick up the student from school as soon as possible. Parent(s) or guardian(s) will also be asked to screen members of the infested student’s house. Close contacts should be checked and treated if they have active infestation.

Entire classroom or bus screening is not necessary because of the lack of evidence of efficacy according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. School screenings do not take the place of more careful parental checks.

Students may return to school once they have been treated and submit the district’s treatment form identifying the treatment used.
Students who present with nits will be allowed to remain in school. Parent(s) orguardian(s) may be notified on individualized basis. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses discourage no-nit policies.
