6004 Curriculum and Instruction Development

The superintendent or his/her designee shall be responsible for providing and directing system-wide planning for curriculum, instruction, assessment and staff development. 

The curriculum shall be standards-driven and accountability-based. The standards shall be the same as the measurable model academic content standards in reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and any other academic areas adopted by or required by the State Board of Education and shall cover at least the same grade levels required by the State Board.  The curriculum shall be articulated preK-12 and shall reflect the comprehensive plan of the school district.

The district’s instructional model shall be research-based and provide for consistent implementation of best teaching practices in grades preK-12.

All professional staff members are responsible for implementing the district’s curriculum and instructional model. 

The superintendent or his/her designee will present the curriculum and instructional model to the board for approval or modification.  

The superintendent or designee shall be responsible for establishing curriculum and instruction guides to articulate and coordinate the written curriculum and best teaching practices to provide consistency from one level of the district to the next.  Curriculum guides shall provide for the development of the school district’s curriculum and shall set academic standards, identify essential educational outcome criteria, and provide for the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of student learning. 

Teachers are responsible for following the curriculum guides, teaching the written curriculum, and implementing the district’s instructional model. Principals are responsible for monitoring curriculum and instruction in their buildings and evaluating teachers to ensure that they are teaching in compliance with the curriculum guides, written curriculum, and instructional model. The superintendent and his/her designee shall ensure that principals monitor the implementation of curriculum and instruction when evaluating teachers.
