Lexington FFA Members Attend National FFA Convention

November 5, 2014

Twelve Lexington High School Students recently spent four days traveling and participating in the Annual FFA National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.  Sponsors for the trip were Brad Schott, Lexington FFA Advisor, and Teresa Messersmith, Director of Student Services for Lexington Public Schools.  Mrs. Messersmith had a son competing in the extemporaneous speaking contest at the convention.

Students attending were:

Jackie Vu, Andrew Saiz, Easton Young, Tomas Margritz, Ethan Woehrle, Jose Sanchez, Eulalia Francisco, Alan Zamarripa, Annie Garcia, Danielle Barraza,  Morgan Bowers, and Emerson Canales.

In addition to meeting FFA members from all over the country, the students participated in leadership workshops, listened to some great speeches, and wandered about a huge expo with booths by every Agricultural Business imaginable.

One of the highlights of the trip was touring Jonabell Farms, one of seven of the Darley Stables throughout the world.  They are owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.  A student asked our tour guide what some of the horses are insured for, and the guide’s response, was, “Sheikh Mohammad, probably has enough money that he doesn’t have to worry about insurance.”  We were able to see up close, Street Sense, the 2007 winner of the Kentucky Derby and next to him, Hard Spun, one of his main competitors during his “Run for the Roses”.
