Mrs. Ritta-Olson's Reading Class

October 5, 2015

This semester, Reading students have been learning about the world of music and what happens when it becomes offensive to some. At first, we watched a video that showed how music has been censored and/or banned for decades. Then, we read a letter to an editor.  It was written during a time when cable companies were banning MTV. Later, we read a newspaper article about a school that banned all personal music across the district.  The article demonstrated a positive way teens can influence change in a school.  Finally, we read a Social Studies feature about censorship and the first amendment.  We discussed the difference between what is protected under the first amendment and what might happen when offensive language is used.  Now students are preparing for their midterm test that will be given this Thursday, October 9th.
