Reading Makes You Smarter

November 19, 2015

Check out the work of Jim Trelease at http://www.trelease-on-reading.com/rah-ch1.html  or consider another reading initiative – 1000 books before kindergarten.  One does not have to have a ‘wall of degrees’ to insure your child is ready to learn.  Nurturing the love of reading is one of the best gifts you can give your child to prepare them as a life long learner.

Your high school library continues to expand reading choices for our students. (See the high school library web page for links and directions for accessing all the following reading choices.   http://www.lexschools.org/schools/lexington-high-school/library)

1) Currently there is a collection of 11,000+ print titles with new titles added each month.  Check out the latest new titles via Destiny Quest. Use your library account login and password (computer credentials) to access all of the benefits of this software!

2) Follett Shelf is one of the LHS electronic book platforms with over 260 titles; many of the non-fiction titles are unlimited users – every student and staff member at the high school can be reading the same book.   Highlighting and note taking is also a feature.

3) The Gale Virtual Reference Library is another electronic book platform that offers LHS students online quality reference material, again unlimited simultaneous access to all LHS students and staff.

4) TumbleBookCloud - www.TumbleBookCloud.com is an online collection of ebooks and read-along chapter books, graphic novels, educational videos, and audio books! All books are available with unlimited access, all the time, from any device with an Internet connection.

5) ESU10 Digital Library powered by OverDrive – LHS students can read eBooks on a variety of devices, including PC and Mac® computers, Chromebook™ computers, the Apple iPhone®, iPad® and iPod® touch, Android™ phones and tablets, Windows® phones and many eBook readers such as the Barnes & Noble NOOK™, Kobo eReader and Amazon® Kindle® (U.S. only).  This collection currently numbers 1800+ selections, including a number of audiobooks.  ESU10 has allocated $20,000.00 each year for five years to build this collection.
