Some random happenings from room 120....

Students in LHS's chemistry classes find themselves embroiled in the epic battle of student vs. stoichiometry.  Stoichiometry is based upon the law of conservation of mass.  Students use given amounts of reactants to calculate the theoretical mass of products, the limiting reactant, the excess reactant and how much of the reactant is leftover at the end of the reaction.  Then students use that information to calculate the percent yield of an actual reaction.  Stoichiometry is the five paragraph essay of chemistry.  

Other things that are happening in Ms. Klein's room is homeroom.  We have become one of the top scoring HRs at LHS.  Our sophomores have really picked up the pace by raising their DG scores from last semester making this possible.  Students receive a baked good treat from Ms. Klein when they meet their academic goal every week.  Approximately 85% of the students regularly meet their academic goals.  We are hoping for 100% by the end of the semester!   Another item of note is that Jairo Alvarez is our HR recycling officer.  He is in charge of collecting the breakfast plastic bags at the end of the period for recycling.  We will be graduating four seniors in May...Gustavo Valencia, Aileen Martin, McKenzie Hill, and Rafael Santoyo.  We wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors!

Plants!!  Plants!  Plants!  Have you noticed the plants in some teachers' rooms...Mrs. Reeve's, Mrs. Meyer's, Mr. Klein's, Mr. McHargue’s, Mr. Burson's, Ms. Klein's, and most recently Mrs. Fisher's?  This year we have been trying something new.  The plants are being watered with dilute fertilizer and a commercial vitamin formula.  All teachers are reporting a remarkable improvement in plant growth and vitality.  Why is this important?  Plants are an important part of the classroom environment.  A study at The Royal College of Agriculture in Circencester, England, found that students demonstrate 70 percent greater attentiveness when they’re taught in rooms containing plants. In the same study, attendance was also higher for lectures given in classrooms with plants. In another study, the Dutch Product Board for Horticulture commissioned a workplace study that discovered that adding plants to office settings decreases fatigue, colds, headaches, coughs, sore throats and flu-like symptoms. In another study by the Agricultural University of Norway, sickness rates fell by more than 60 percent in offices with plants.  How awesome is that!?!

Do you need a Kleenex?  Chemistry students have brought in so many boxes of Kleenexes we are able to share with others.  Due to the generosity of chemistry students, we have been able to provide the library with Kleenex as well as several other classrooms....chemistry students have even provided the Kleenex used at the home basketball games.
