From Beowulf to Tomorrowland

     English 4 (Senior English) has been exciting this semester.  The class began with a novel study of Animal Farm, a 1940s novel by George Orwell.  Before reading, students reviewed some of the events occurring in Europe at the time to help better understand the historical background of the novel.  They were very interested in comparing and contrasting capitalism, socialism, and communism as these are terms we often hear but might not fully understand.

     Since the novel study has concluded, students have begun the next unit covering Medieval British Literature.  Starting with the earliest English literature, students are examining the historical background relevant to “The Seafarer,” “The Wander,” “Beowulf,” and other Old English works.  They are focusing on the British people of the times and how their lives and societies shaped and were reflected in the literature.  The class will continue to progress through British literature chronologically.

     At the same time, students are beginning to work on their senior research papers.  Having opened the project with the movie Tomorrowland, students will be examining problems or shortfalls in our world and asking themselves the question, “What can I do to make the world a better place?”  Students will come away from this project with the realization that each of their voices has an effect on the world, be it great or small.  Topics can be as local as boosting the recycling effort here in Lexington or as grand as tackling world hunger.

     I am honored to have these young men and women in class and I am excited to see what they have to offer the world!
