LHS Foundations of Leadership - Shaping the Heart in Servant Leaders

September 24, 2019

All 9th graders at Lexington High School participate in a Foundations of Leadership (FOL) course.  This course is designed to enhance and support the learning experiences of 9th grade students to become knowledgeable, responsible, and caring students as they transition into high school.  Students are active partners in creating an environment that both promotes strategies for academic success and excellence, and also integrates social and emotional learning.  The curriculum is designed to emphasize the acquisition and utilization of leadership traits and qualities as well as literacy skills.

Each year, FOL students learn about and practice servant leadership skills.  A servant leader is someone who is servant first, who has responsibility to be in the world, and so he/she contributes to the well being of people and community. This leadership philosophy suggests a comprehensive view of the quality of people, work, and community spirit. It requires an understanding of identity, mission, vision, and environment.   Qualities of a servant leader include empathy, active listening, awareness, conceptualization, persuasion, healing, foresight, and stewardship.

In order to foster and apply qualities of servant leadership, Mrs. Archer’s and Mr. Patocka’s FOL students are beginning to work on their latest philanthropic project – Samaritan’s Purse, “Operation Christmas Child”. Students are in the process of collecting shoeboxes and gift items appropriate for children between the ages of 2 and 14.  These 9th graders hope to gather enough materials to produce at least 40 shoebox gifts this year.  These boxes of love will include school and art supplies, personal hygiene items, clothing, small toys, stuffed animals, flashlights, collapsible water bottles, and other specially selected treasures.  Students will giftwrap each shoebox and enclose a personally written letter and FOL class photograph within each holiday shoebox.  The gifts will be sent to children in need in developing countries around the world.

If you would like to donate shoeboxes, wrapping paper, tape, or gift items for this servant leadership project, please contact Mrs. Archer or Mr. Patocka:  becky.archer@lexschools.org or travis.patocka@lexschools.org
