Power of Persuasion

The Advanced Literacy classes are learning more about forms of persuasion and argumentation. In doing so, students are refreshing their understanding of modes of persuasion: ethos, logos, and pathos. An emphasis on understanding arguments is to not simply recognize the point being made but the relevance and adequacy of support. Students will be designing basic commercials by using these forms of persuasion to convince the audience. In addition, students are reading current event issues and identifying the points, validity, and credibility of the author.  Some topics include performance enhancing drug use by teens, birthright citizenship, artificial intelligence (robots in today’s society), and freedom of speech acts related to the national anthem. Extensions of these lessons will include writing prompts, similar to the ACT test format, that students are preparing to take later this school year.
