Standing on the Shoulder of Giants

We are settling in a healthy routine in the algebra classroom, with warm-ups that challenge our problem solving skills, lessons that progress through the Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 concepts one step at a time as well as taking a look at what the ACT mathematics test expects students to understand in order to be college and career ready. 

We also have embarked on an adventure in math history, researching mathematicians who have gone before us that had the courage to ask important questions that did not have answers during their time.  We took a survey on-line that matched our characteristics with one or more mathematicians from the past.  Here is the link to the survey:  http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/grabbag/MathQuiz/index.asp

The mathematicians from our survey results included:  Blaise Pascal, Euclid, Albert Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton, Pythagoras of Samos, Grace Brewster Murray Hopper, Pierre De Fermat, and Gottfried Wilhelm Von Leibniz. 

We are now using Internet resources to learn more about the mathematicians each week.  Not only are we growing in our understanding of those who went before us in the field of mathematics, we are deepening our gratitude for their tremendous work that allows us to live in comfort and safety.
