8th Graders Attend High School Orientation

On Thursday, March 9th, all eighth graders had the opportunity to attend an orientation session at the high school.  The Patriot team attended a morning session and the Liberty and Freedom teams attended in the afternoon.  After a welcome assembly with Mrs. McKeone, high school counselor, and some of the administrators, students were divided into four groups in order to rotate through four different stations.

One station was an activity fair, where students had the opportunity to talk with high school students representing each athletic team and club/activity offered at the high school.  Eighth graders were able to sign up if they were interested in a particular sport or activity so they can receive communication about summer camps, info, etc.  During this session, eighth graders also heard from a panel of students about the importance of starting high school strong.

The second station included a fun activity facilitated by Mr. Jilka and Mrs. Brockmoller, both teachers of the Foundations of Leadership class at the high school.  Students received a taste of what this class will be like and were also able to share their excitements and concerns for entering high school.

The third rotation was a session with the high school counselors discussing courses for next year as freshmen.  The students watched a short video on several of the elective classes offered, and then marked their requests on a course selection sheet that will be used to register for freshmen classes when the high school counselors come to the middle school at the end of March.

The final station was a tour of the school.  Student Council members led groups on a tour of the entire school including the shop across the street.  Many eighth graders enjoyed getting to see a side of the school they do not have the chance to see when they attend athletic events at the high school.

Overall, the eighth graders had an awesome time getting to see what high school is all about, and the high school did an outstanding job putting together such a wonderful event.  It was emphasized many times throughout the day by high school students and staff, they are excited to welcome the eighth grade class to the high school next year, but first, it is important to finish middle school strong!
