Ancestors & Names

The end of the school year is upon us, and what a busy semester it's been! In my geography class we have been discussing the very controversial issue of immigration. Students have learned about the push and pull factors that make someone leave their country. We have also been looking at how immigrants affect the United States.  We've also looked at how there are more ethnicities that immigrate to the United States other than Latinos.  This chapter so far has been one of the best chapters we've worked with.  Some of the activates students have worked on include the following; they have written a journal entry putting themselves into the shoes of an immigrant. They had to explain why they were leaving their home country, and what challenges they expected to have upon arrival to the United States.  They have also looked up the meaning of their last names to see where their ancestors might have possibly come from using The students really enjoyed this, after looking up their last name they began playing with other last names.
