Lexington TeamMates Mentoring Program Fall 2016 Update

 The TeamMates Difference

Tom and Nancy Osborne founded the TeamMates Mentoring Program in 1991 in an effort to provide support and encouragement to school aged youth. The goal of the program is to see youth graduate from high school and pursue post-secondary education. To reach this goal, youth meet once a week with a caring adult who serves as a mentor.

The Lexington TeamMates Mentoring Program was started in 1995 and continues today with the support of the community. The Lexington TeamMates program has tripled in size within the few years due to caring community members donating their time. We believe that mentoring is a powerful tool to help kids succeed in life. Mentors give youth a sense of hope, purpose and vision.

Snapshot of 2015-2016 Academic Year
Over the course of the 2015-2016 school year, the Lexington TeamMates Mentoring Program was able to match 18 new mentors and student mentees in our program. Going into the year, our matched students had a 68% improvement in academic performance, 91% few disciplinary referrals, and 97% few unexcused absences.   Our mentors visited their student mentees an average of 26 times throughout this school year, spending any where from 20 minutes to one hour with them.

We were able to get out in the community as well and have some fun.  During the fall of 2015, we hosted our annual Tailgate fundraiser at the Lexington High School Homecoming Football game.  We were able to raise about half of the money necessary to run our program for the year.  During the winter, we were able to do a few fun activities including watching a movie at the newly-renovated Majestic Theatre and doing a Christmas Tree Ornament Decorating event that allowed us to display our ornaments at the Dawson County Museum.  To wrap the year up, went to Cozad’s Natural Escapes to do pottery painting and traveled to Lincoln for the Cornhusker Spring Game.  We were very honored and lucky to have one of our senior TeamMates’ mentees speak during the honor ceremony for graduating TeamMates across the state.

Moving Forward
It is the mission of TeamMates to positively impact the world by inspiring youth to reach their full potential through mentoring.  With that said, the TeamMates Mentoring Program is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year and we want to do our part in Lexington by getting our chapter up to 100 matches as well as raise funds to keep our program active.  That means we need caring adults to help inspire the current 20 students who are still waiting to be matched in our program. These students range from 6th graders to 10th graders.  They have hopes of being football players, computer engineers, artists, musicians, physical therapists, and so much more.  These students are at the top of most of their classes but they need an additional caring adult in their life to help them get through high school and graduation.

This year we have already celebrated our TeamMates TEAM day with local businesses, participated in Give BIG Lexington, held a TeamMates Movie Night at the Majestic Theatre and are about ready to hold our TeamMates Tailgate at the December 8th Lex vs. Holdrege basketball games.
