Vocal Music Program

October 9, 2015

The Lexington high school vocal music program is off to a great start for the year. The choir has grown to an impressive 66 students, an increase of nearly 20 singers over last year. We couldn’t be happier. The new voices are a great addition to our sound and we will be better than ever!

Currently, the high school choir is preparing for our annual visit to Kearney for the UNK Composer in Concert series. This year’s guest conductor is renowned composer Rene Clausen, conductor of the Concordia Choir, Concordia College, Moorehead, MN. Dr. Clausen is one of the most respected collegiate choir educators and successful choral composers alive today. It is an amazing treat for our students to have the opportunity to have him rehearse and conduct a performance entirely comprised of his own compositions. Joining the Lexington Choir for this performance will be the UNK Choraleers, Kearney High Chorale, Minden High School Choir and Nebraska Christian High School Choir. The performance will take place in the Recital Hall at the Fine Arts Building on the UNK Campus, Monday Evening, October 26th.

In addition to our work for the UNK performance, we have just completed our first fundraiser of the school year. Choir and Band Members have been selling coffee to raise money for an upcoming trip to see Phantom of the Opera at the Orpheum Theatre in Omaha on April 22nd. The music teaching staff is committed to finding opportunities for our students to see amazing performances as often as possible. Phantom of the Opera is one of the most successful and longest running Broadway musicals of all time. In the spring semester of 2014 we took 4 bus-loads of students to the Orpheum for a performance of Wicked. That was an experience our kids are still talking about today. We are sure Phantom of the Opera will offer a similar memory our kids will carry with them forever.
